BAM Infra Nederland

The day when the coalition in Amsterdam decided that the city should become largely car-free by further increasing parking fees and cancelling 10,000 parking slots, BAM Infra already had a solution for this: a bike-based mobility concept!

A detection unit, part of the system, is placed at a considerable distance from the location where the work is carried out. When this unit detects a train approaching, it notifies the workers on the tracks by means of light and acoustic signals, generated by a unit located at the work site. This unit measures the ambient noise and adjusts its alarm volume accordingly.
This system enables certain activities to be carried out in the daytime and outside the weekends, for example doing measurements, carrying out minor repairs and adjusting points.

‘I'll be fifteen minutes late. I'm still at town hall.’ Pleased to meet you: Shirley van den Bos, 28 years old, permits adviser on the Nieuwe Sluis Terneuzen lock project. It takes quite a commitment from her to take the roughly two-hour drive from Schiedam to Terneuzen every day. But she is committed. More than committed.

On Thursday 24 May, we opened a unique stretch of road in the province of Utrecht, the only road in the Netherlands with solar panels in the road surface. This is a two-year pilot project.

‘Everything went according to plan,’ said Rick Bruinink, project leader for BAM Infra. That sounds quite logical. But is there any logic to manoeuvring 1,000 tonnes of steel across several tracks? ‘It's all a matter of thorough preparation, a good design and the right calculations in advance,’ Rick continued. And even that is not enough. You also need the right people on site. This all came together in Zwolle during this year's Whit Sunday weekend.

Happy residents
The newly constructed N18 has relieved the town centres of Eibergen, Haaksbergen and Usselotaken of lots of traffic, making them much safer and more pleasant to live in. The local residents are happy that the region is easy to reach again. And the new road has also cut off twenty minutes of the time needed to travel from Enschede to Lichtenvoorde during the rush hour.

Although the XblocPlus is called the Levvel bloc on this project, it is still a BAM Infra innovation. Some 75,000 innovative concrete blocks are going to offer protection on the Wadden Sea side. These blocks weigh some 6,500 kg each, are very strong, weaken waves, and are easy to install. And they also attract sea life.

BAM Infra recently showed its ‘greenest’ side at the Building Holland fair for the construction and real estate sectors. Why were we present? That’s simple: a good built environment needs good infrastructure. And what's more: the fair focussed on building the future of the Netherlands, based on the latest new trends and developments.

Successor to the bar code
RFID tags are minuscule chips that contain an identification code and that can be read out remotely. In a sense, RFID is the advanced successor to the bar code. RFID's main advantages are that it can store more information, that the chip can be integrated into objects almost invisibly, and that there is no need to run the object along a scanner in order to read the information.

You might be inclined to think that working in a nature reserve is something that only nature managers and forest rangers do. But at BAM, we also work in nature areas every now and then. A good example of this is the Groene Woud (Green Forest) in the province of Noord-Brabant, where BAM Infra worked on the Natuurbrug De Mortelen ecoduct.

Cleaner building sites. That is what we are committed to. And that requires formic acid. Or, put more exactly, the generator sets of the FAST Group that can run on this sustainable fuel solution. These generators can provide building sites with sustainable energy. In the presence of Dutch Prince Constantijn, BAM Infra, in its capacity as ‘launching customer’, signed a declaration of intent with the FAST Group for the use of climate-neutral generator sets.

Under the motto of ‘Better and more’, NS and ProRail are working together intensively to raise the railway system and public transport in the Netherlands to a higher level. For example, on the Amsterdam - Utrecht line, trains are running every ten minutes. And by 2028, you should be able to catch intercity or sprinter trains every ten minutes on all the busy lines. This should put an end to the use of timetables.

Two weeks ago, we told you that you could see a construction pit filled with water in the Driebergen-Zeist station area. This water is needed in order to have enough water pressure to keep the sheet piling up straight and to prevent it from collapsing. The construction pit will be the southern square of the new station area.

Do you recognise this situation? You are waiting, on your bike, at a closed level crossing, like you do every day. You are surrounded by cars with their engines running and there is a group of excited students behind you. You are waiting for the red lights to go out so that you can ride on at full speed and be on time for your appointment. And then you see a development sign next to the road: ‘This March, BAM is starting the construction of two tunnels underneath the railway line so as to improve accessibility and safety for motorists and cyclists.’ That sounds good! Wouldn't it be great if you could just ride on, without having to worry about cars that pass you at high speed?

In early February it was 65 years since the flood in Zeeland. We have all seen the film footage of people in boats. Completely surprised by the water. On the run, driven from their homes. A flood also threatened to happen in Ochten in 1995. At that time, hundreds of military personnel helped to save the day by placing sandbags on the dyke.

It was no coincidence that pupils of the De Bongerd primary school played a central role in the official opening of the new N264 ring road in Haps. Their school yard borders on what used to be the main road through the town. However, the new ring road has now made their way to school and their way home safer.

Why is there so much water in the construction pit of the Driebergen-Zeist station area? ‘We need this water to have enough water pressure to keep the sheet piling up straight while we excavate the sand,’ is what Jorien Batterink (area management specialist) wrote on the facebook page for the station area.

With effect from 2019, more than 1200 buses will be using the new bus bridge to cross the railway tracks in Zwolle every day. In order to take some pressure off the busy north side of the railway station, the current bus station will be moved to the south side. The buses from the north and the centre of Zwolle will be using the new bus bridge to quickly and comfortably transport travellers to and from the new bus platform.

‘Most people don't realise how much is involved in breeding pedigree dogs. The goal of breeding a specific breed is to improve the breed, or at least to maintain its current level.'

The Groene Woud (Green Forest) is located in the heart of the province of Noord-Brabant. A unique sequence of interconnected nature reserves: Kampina, de Mortelen, de Scheeken and the Dommel river valley. The railway connection between Eindhoven and Boxtel goes right through this area. To enable animals to safely travel from one nature reserve to the next, ProRail has commissioned the construction of a new ecoduct: the ‘De Mortelen’ nature bridge, a passage where wildlife can safely cross the railway.
